Description from the seller
Product Description
Vintage Japanese Folding Screen – Landscape Painting (Sansui) – Traditional Decor – 208cm
This is a traditional Japanese folding screen (*byobu*).
It features a multi-panel folding structure and spans approximately 208 cm in width when fully extended. The surface depicts a traditional Japanese landscape featuring trees, mountains, and waterside scenery; its appeal lies in its subdued color palette and the unique character acquired over many years.
Folding screens have long been used as traditional interior decor in Japan. While originally serving a practical purpose as room dividers, they evolved into art objects that beautify interiors through the application of paintings and decorative designs.
This item is considered to be of considerable age, and signs of wear from the passage of time are visible on the surface, including fading, discoloration, stains, dirt, scuffs, paint peeling, and surface deterioration.
However, the patina and texture resulting from this aging process offer a unique charm not found in modern, brand-new items. It possesses a rich, evocative appearance that embodies the aesthetic of *wabi-sabi*—an appreciation of imperfection and the beauty of age—often found in Japanese antiques and folk art.
With a width of approximately 208 cm when fully opened, it makes a striking visual statement. It is a compelling piece for collectors interested in Japanese art, traditional culture, vintage folding screens, or Japanese-style interior decor.
