Description from the seller
Five beautiful axe handles from New Guinea. Four from the Asmat region, richly decorated with typical Asmat motifs, a ancestral head, and a hornbill (the Year Bird) associated with headhunting. One handle originating from the Highlands, the Dani territory (the striped handle). The handle with a stone axe comes from Koos Knol's collection. The axe itself does not seem to belong and has been glued on with putty. The handle is exquisite.
The remaining four axe handles were all collected by Jac Hoogerbrugge in the 1960s.
