Bruce Davidson
American, born 1933
Bruce Davidson was born in 1933 in Oak Park, Illinois, and at the age of sixteen won first prize in the Kodak National High School Competition. He studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology and at Yale University.
During his military service in Paris, Davidson met Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the founders of Magnum Photos. In 1957 he worked as a freelance photographer for Life and became a member of Magnum in 1959.
Davidson received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1962 to document the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. In 1963 the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented a solo exhibition of his work, featuring impressive and historic images.
Davidson was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts' first photography fellowship in 1966, and for the next two years he photographed a block in New York City: The resulting book East 100th Street presents his photographs of residents of a run-down tenement in Spanish Harlem.
Davidson broadened his view of the city with Subway, in which he explored the New York City subway and its underground travelers, and Central Park, a four-year engagement with the city’s magnificent green space, a meeting of people, nature, and city. Davidson's film Living Off the Land won the Critics' Prize at the American Film Festival.
Henry Geldzahler, former curator of modern art at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, said: “The ability to enter an environment that superficially appears foreign with such sensitivity remains Bruce Davidson's greatest achievement. In his work, he becomes a friendly documentarian of tenderness and tragedy.”
Davidson continues to live and work in New York City.
