A SIGNED copy, #6 of 10, not for sale, printed on Simili Japon, binding in glossy sturdy beige cardboard (unlike the orange trade edition). The book has 286 pages, measures 21.5 x 16 cm and weighs 685 g. Condition: clean interior, read slightly skewed, second flyleaf removed, damage above the bottom edge of the spine. (see photos as part of the description).
Arthur van Schendel (1874–1946) was a Dutch writer with a substantial body of work (over forty novels and short story collections). Among his best-known novels are Een zwerver verliefd, Het fregatschip Johanna Maria, Een Hollands drama and De wereld een dansfeest.
Van Schendel lost his father at a young age, Charles George Henri François van Schendel, a lieutenant colonel in the Dutch East Indies Army. After his hbs education in Amsterdam he was first trained for the stage, then for teaching. He subsequently spent some time as a teacher in England and as an English teacher in the Netherlands. After three years of marriage, Van Schendel lost his first wife; he remarried in 1908, settled as a writer first in Ede and later in Sestri Levante, Italy, until 1945.[6]
Van Schendel was an admirer of Gorter. He had many friends in the literary world: beside Gorter, among others Willem Witsen, Willem Kloos and Albert Verwey. Later he met Jan Toorop and Aart van der Leeuw (with whom he carried on extensive correspondence about stylistic issues), Henriette Roland Holst and her husband Richard Roland Holst.
