Title: Trent Parke
Bondi Beach, New South Wales, Australia, 2000
by Trent Parke/Magnum Photos
Trent Parke
Australian, born 1971
Trent Parke was born in 1971 and grew up in Newcastle, New South Wales. With his mother's Pentax Spotmatic and his family's laundry as a darkroom he began photographing at about age 12. Today Parke is the only Australian photographer represented by Magnum, and mainly works as a street photographer.
In 2003 Parke drove almost 90,000 km across Australia with his wife and photographer Narelle Autio. Minutes to Midnight, the photo collection of this trip, offers a sometimes unsettling portrait of 21st-century Australia, from the arid Outback to the chaotic, melancholy life in remote Aboriginal towns. For this project Parke was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography.
Parke won the World Press Photo Award in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2005 and received the ABN AMRO Emerging Artist Award in 2006. In 1999 he was selected for the World Press Photo Masterclass. Parke has published two books, Dream/Life in 1999 and The Seventh Wave together with Narelle Autio in 2000. His work has been exhibited widely. In 2006 the National Gallery of Australia acquired Parke's entire exhibition Minutes to Midnight, and in 2015 the Gallery of South Australia at the Adelaide Festival presented The Black Rose, a large meditation on the path of life.
