This creation by KLEINER Dominique – Atelier Français, Fécamp is a contemporary art chessboard imagined around the universe of space exploration, watchmaking, and retro-futurist design.

Made in a large format of 49 × 49 cm, this Premium edition pairs a noble wood frame with an aluminum playing surface, giving the piece a far more imposing presence than a traditional chessboard. Deep black, intense green, ivory, and golden touches compose a deliberately luxurious aesthetic, directly inspired by the codes of design and space exploration.

The pieces themselves form a true collection of small sculptures. Astronauts, rockets, space modules, and shapes inspired by scientific imagination create two opposing armies, in metallic green and gold facing ivory and gold. The pieces are crafted in resin, then prepared, painted, patinated, and varnished by hand, giving each copy its own nuances and unique characteristics.

The board features a graphic composition specially created for this work, blending a checkerboard pattern with astronomical elements, navigation instruments, and references to the golden age of space conquest. The large central rocket enhances the dramatic character of the composition without compromising the object’s primary function as a chessboard.

This is No. 1 of an extremely limited edition of only 10 pieces. This first piece of the series comes with its certificate of authenticity, numbered and signed by the artist.

More than just a chess game, Rolex Space Odyssey has been conceived as a true decorative and collectible object, to be displayed in a contemporary interior, an office, a library, or among a collection devoted to design, watchmaking, or the space universe.

About the artist

KLEINER Dominique, a French artist based in Fécamp, has for several years been developing a series of creations blending digital art, sculpture, painting, and decorative objects. After training at the Rouen Beaux-Arts and an initial focus on traditional painting, his universe gradually shifted toward contemporary works where popular culture, luxury, design, and iconic objects meet.

Each chessboard is designed as a work in its own right: graphic design of the board, creation and preparation of the pieces, painting, patination, assembly, and finishes are carried out with particular attention to detail.
