Original hand-engraved Peruvian calabash dating from the late 20th century, 18 cm high with a 12 cm by 12 cm base, weighing 300 g, associated with Inca culture, decorated with Indigenous figures, animals and geometric motifs and a Quechua inscription, from a private collection and in fair condition, sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
Engraved Andean Calabash, Peru
Hand-engraved calabash decorated with Indigenous figures, animals, geometric motifs and an Andean condor.
The inscription reads
“Ama sua, ama llulla, ama quella”, the traditional Quechua moral formula meaning
“Do not steal, do not lie, do not be idle.”
Probably a 20th-century Andean folk-art object, rather than an ancient Inca object. Warm natural patina and richly detailed incised decoration.
Dimensions: 18 cm x 12 cm x 12 cm
Peru
The calabash is close and still with the seeds inside.
Good overall condition with a warm natural patina and minor age-related wear.
(This is a 20th-century folk-art object, rather than an archaeological Inca artefact. It is offered as an attractive example of Peruvian Andean decorative art.)
