Description from the seller
Title: Japanese Hexagonal Bronze Hanging Lantern (雪見灯籠), Openwork Chilong Dragon Pattern
Technique: Lost-wax one-piece casting, full openwork carving
Dimensions: approx. H 30 × Dia. 28.5 cm (H 11.8 × Dia. 11.2 in)
Weight: 3350 g
Material: Bronze
Period: Late Taisho to Early Showa era (c.1910–1930)
This hexagonal pavilion-style Yukimi tōrō (雪見灯籠) can be hung or placed on the ground. It is a classic Japanese bronze decorative piece dating from the late Taisho to early Showa period, cast in one piece by traditional lost‑wax method. Suitable for gardens, tea rooms and entryways, it functions as a candle holder, ambient decor and ornamental display.
Made in authentic Japanese hexagonal pavilion form. The peaked roof is finely cast with classic seigaiha wave patterns, with exquisite details. The six sides of the lantern body are fully decorated with openwork chilong dragon and karakusa scrollwork, featuring translucent pierced layers with distinct depth. It originally had a hinged side door; the door is now detached and can be simply repaired. The lantern is fully functional, suitable for tealights or incense candles. The base has six‑petal floral openwork for ventilation.
Solid single casting with robust structure. The bronze surface bears naturally aged, mellow antique patina formed over decades, with thick, smooth skin and elegant metallic texture. When lit, light streams through the intricate openwork and creates stunning shadow effects. It is a refined Japanese decorative object with profound charm.
Due to age, there is natural oxidised patina and wear from use. No repairs to the main body. Overall in good vintage condition for its age.
