GARIMBERTO (Garimberti), Girolamo,

Born in Parma to a noble family. He worked closely with the Roman papal court.
He became palatine count and canon of St. Peter’s Basilica. He served as vicar of the Basilica of St. John Lateran. He was named bishop of Gallese in 1562. He died in Rome in 1575 and is buried in the Basilica of St. John Lateran.

The Garimberti lineage had emerged through the holding of important public offices during the 14th century, when the “people” governed the commune of Parma; the Garimberto family had already acquired noble titles in the 15th century by joining the faction of the powerful aristocratic Rossi family and in the so-called aggregation of the Guelfs.

Garimberto was directed to humanistic studies; moving to Rome, while still attempting a career at the Pontifical Court, in 1527 he accompanied Clement VII on the journey to Orvieto, during his flight from Rome, devastated by the sack.

During the pontificate of Paul III, with a prominent role, he was entrusted as collaborator by Cardinal and nephew Alessandro Farnese. In 1538 in Provence with the Pontifical delegation they attempted the mission to establish peace between Charles V and Francis I.

The Farnese years of pontificate also coincided with the start of an intense cultural activity: Garimberti established contacts through writings with Claudio Tolomei, with the philosopher Antonio Bernardi and also entered correspondence with Bernardo Tasso and Pietro Aretino. In the following years he carried out a historic literary production of note.
