Denys d'Halicarnasse & M. Bellanger - Les Antiquités Romaines de Denys d'Halicarnasse - 1723

Rare two-volume illustrated edition with 3 maps and 5 folded plates hors texte of this original French edition of one of the great historical narratives devoted to the origins and early centuries of Rome -

The work reproduces the opus of Denys d'Halicarnasse, Greek historian settled in Rome in the 1st century BCE, whose Antiquities of Rome aimed to recount the history of Rome from its legendary origins to the early stages of its political development, with particular emphasis on the relations between Greek and Roman traditions -

Unlike a simple military chronicle, the narrative seeks to explain the gradual formation of Roman power by examining institutions, customs, laws, manners, religious practices, social relations and political events that would have contributed to the building of the city -
