Description from the seller
Fascinating illustrated edition of 140 color drawings including 11/12 full-page plates (not in the text) of this humorous and illustrated work characteristic of Albert Robida’s satirical universe—writer, draughtsman, caricaturist and chronicler particularly attentive to the transformations of 19th-century French society.
Through the adventures of Monsieur Dumollet, a naïve traveler often overwhelmed by the situations he encounters, Robida builds a parody of travel narratives and travel guides that were then on the rise, while offering a mordant observation of the habits, fashions, places and behaviors of his contemporaries.
Travel serves here as a narrative pretext to multiply comic scenes, unexpected encounters, misunderstandings and satirical observations, while the main character acts as a thread guiding a sequence of tableaux in which the author constantly plays on the contrast between the traveler’s ambitions and the realities he faces.
A. Robida - Le Voyage de M. Dumollet - 1883 - Georges Decaux -
111 Pages.
Good condition of the binding, the work in its full original illustrated card covers bound by Engel, with a pretty blue-and-black front plate signed A. Souze, wear and dirt from use, some minor defects on the cover, corners worn, the two bottom corners open, cut along the top of the spine for 6 cm with no missing pieces, soft heads with small tears, red edges, smooth spine titled in red and black, as well as the first cover—
Good interior condition, some stains, title page printed in red and black and adorned with a fine vignette, some pages loose, the work enriched by 140 color drawings including 11/12 full-page plates (one plate missing), endpapers slightly opened, a pleasant copy—
