Description from the seller
Albert Einstein - Sidelights on Relativity - First English Edition - 1922
An excellent, highly collectible copy of the first English edition of Albert Einstein’s Sidelights on Relativity. Published in London by Methuen & Co. in 1922, this volume brings together two of Einstein’s most crucial and foundational public lectures delivered following his rise to global fame after the verification of General Relativity
The book is masterfully translated into English by the British scholars G.B. Jeffery and W. Perrett. It comprises two core addresses:
1. "Ether and Relativity" (Originally delivered at the University of Leyden in 1920), where Einstein revisits the historical concept of the cosmic medium in the context of general relativity.
2. "Geometry and Experience" (Originally delivered to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1921), exploring how non-Euclidean geometry applies to a physical, finite universe.
Original Cloth Binding: Retains its genuine publisher's olivaceous/green cloth cover with blind-stamped title detailing.
Condition Report:
Binding & Exterior: Good / Very Good. Bound in the original green/olive cloth. The front cover text is legibly blind-stamped into the fabric. The binding structures are firm and steady. Minor, standard age-fading is present on the spine and along the margins of the boards. Light bumping and minor shelf rubbing to the spine edges and corner tips, consistent with handled preservation.
Interior Block: Good. The text blocks are tightly bound to the inner binding. Pages show light, uniform age-toning typical of 1920s paper stock. Minor, faint scattered foxing is present along the outer page edges and preliminary margins, but leaves are clean, crisp, and entirely legible. Free of modern ink scribbles or major annotations.
Complete as issued. Includes the integrated inline geometric diagrams embedded directly into the text block to illustrate the second lecture.
Dimensions: Approximately 19.5 cm x 13.0 cm
Page Count: 56 text pages.
Photos supplement descriptions.
