BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST
Lyssandre Saint York,
Designer and artist born in the 1970s.
My artistic work sits at the crossroads of two worlds that fascinate me: the raw energy of street art and the visual efficiency of pop art.
I grew up during the rise of the “seventies” style and Space Age design, a rupture-era when furniture rejected the sobriety of the pre-war period to dare organic shapes, plastic, and vibrant colors.
Influenced by this bold aesthetic, I naturally first traced my path in design and fashion, conceiving and selling concepts around the world for more than 30 years up to today.
This mastery of structure and visual impact later unfolds in my artistic creations. My journey as an artist began with the prism of play, composing my first works in Lego bricks under a frame. This artistic approach allowed me to revisit the great icons of pop culture—from Star Wars heroes to figures like Mario Bros, Mickey, or the iconic Scrooge McDuck—by mixing luxury brand symbols with these Lego characters, icons for an entire generation!
I have always enjoyed appropriation of these symbols to give them a new dimension.
This work naturally extended to creating sculptures with the rebellious graffiti environment of Banksy, or emblematic Art Toy characters. By diverting these sculptures and these iconic figures, I play with contrasts to interrogate our desires and our consumer society.
This conceptual rigor dialogues with the absolute freedom of urban culture. Markers, spray, stencils, paint, drips, and textural superpositions, but also techniques beyond which I marry to the chromatic power of pop art.
My works have thus become a visual collision where the anti-conformism of 70s design and luxury meet the subversive spontaneity of the street.
By juxtaposing and reinventing these collective and cult icons with a graphic and instinctive aesthetic, I offer a reading that is nostalgic, multi-layered, impactful, and decidedly contemporary of our era with societal themes and minimalist conceptual illustration.
From Paris to New York, via Taiwan or even Australia, my works travel the world thanks to you, and I thank you.
