Description from the seller
Christopher Wordsworth - Greece: Pictorial, Descriptive, and Historical - 1840
An exceptionally handsome first edition copy of Christopher Wordsworth’s definitive 19th-century topographical and historical work on Greece. First published in serial parts between 1839 and 1840, this complete 1840 volume remains one of the most celebrated travel and archaeological records of the Victorian era.
Richly Illustrated: Contains an engraved vignette title page, 28 full-page steel-engraved plates/maps, and over 350 highly detailed wood engravings integrated directly into the text block.
Features masterfully rendered scenes from prominent period artists including Copley Fielding, T. Creswick, D. Cox Jun., Harvey, Meissonier, Sargent, Daubigny, and Jaques.
Housed in a premium period full-leather configuration with intricately gilt-embossed panels, raised spine bands, and double-gilt-ruled board borders.
Condition Report:
Binding & Exterior: Good. Bound in full dark leather (likely calfskin or morocco). The front and rear boards are firmly attached with elegant double-gilt ruling borders intact. The spine features traditional raised bands with nicely preserved gilt detailing. Moderate rubbing and wear are visible along the spine joints, head/tail caps, and corner tips, with minor surface loss typical for an authentic binding of this age.
Interior Block: Good. The internal text pages are remarkably tight and securely attached to the binding structure. The text blocks are generally clean with light, uniform age-toning.
Plates & Foxing: Typical for this specific 1840 printing, scattered foxing/browning is present, primarily affecting the preliminary pages, the engraved frontispieces, and the borders of select steel plates. The structural hinges exhibit partial paper separation/cracking inside the inner boards, but the overall structural integrity of the binding remains completely stable. An old ink ownership signature ("G. Boig's" or similar) is present on the top corner of the yellow-coated front endpaper.
Dimensions: Approximately 25.0 cm x 16.5 cm (Thickness: ~4.5 cm)
Page Count: xxvii (preliminaries, tables, and illustration lists) + 356 pages of core text.
Photos supplement descriptions.
