A 17th‑century church candlestick in antique Renaissance style, made of brass, about 48 cm tall, in good condition with signs of age and use.
Description from the seller
17th‑century altar candlestick / church candlestick – brass/brass alloy – approx. 48 cm
Particularly fine and imposing 17th‑century altar candlestick, executed in a copper alloy, presumably brass or bronze.
The candlestick features a richly decorated three‑legged base with on each side a finely worked Renaissance mask, surrounded by symmetrical volutes and stylized foliate ornaments. The three sturdy legs end in rounded feet.
Above the three‑legged base there is a tall, profiled, baluster‑shaped stem with several twisted and lobed decorative elements. The wide, round drip pan carries a long central candle bore.
The design, ornamentation, and proportions are characteristic of European Renaissance of the 16th century and give the candlestick a distinctly ecclesiastical and monumental character.
The underside is open and shows the interior of the old casting. The surface has a beautiful warm gold‑brown patina and clear signs of age and use, including localized wear, discolorations, small irregularities, and oxidation. These are appropriate to the object’s great age and add to its authentic character.
Origin/style: European, Renaissance
Object: altar candlestick / church candlestick
Material: copper alloy, presumably brass/bronze
Height: approx. 48 cm, including the candle bore
Construction: cast, turned and ciscelled/engravings
Condition: good condition given age, with normal signs of aging and use as clearly visible in the photos.
A decorative and collectible example of early European ecclesiastical metalwork.
