Devon (1993) - Ritual II - NO RESERVE

Ritual II is a bold and playful continuation of Devon’s exploration of the swan as a simplified and expressive motif. Set against a vivid turquoise background, the work presents a close, cropped view of the bird, focusing on its sweeping neck, raised wing and elongated body.

The swan is constructed from soft, pale tones of cream, ivory and muted beige, with visible oil pastel marks creating a richly textured surface. Devon deliberately retains the irregularity of the pastel application, allowing individual strokes and variations in tone to remain visible. This tactile treatment contrasts strongly with the saturated turquoise ground, which gives the composition a sense of openness and immediacy.

Strong black outlines surround the different elements of the bird, creating a graphic quality reminiscent of illustration while maintaining the physical presence of a painted work. The raised wing and folded feathers are reduced to simple, almost architectural shapes, while the curved neck introduces a graceful movement across the canvas. The small, understated eye and simplified beak give the swan an almost character-like presence without losing its recognisable form.

The close cropping of the composition is particularly effective, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the relationship between shape, line and texture rather than on a conventional depiction of the animal. The swan becomes less a naturalistic subject and more of a visual symbol, with its repeated curves and gestures suggesting ideas of movement, identity and ritual.

As with Ritual I, the combination of acrylic and oil pastel gives the work a distinctive surface. The acrylic establishes the strong blocks of colour, while the oil pastel introduces softer, more tactile passages and spontaneous marks. The result is a contemporary painting that balances graphic simplicity with an evident sense of hand-made experimentation.
