Illustrated study on the civic and military costumes, heraldry, and clothing of the medieval guilds and trades in the Flemish city of Ghent.
Half-leather bound with marbled plates and leather spine (5 volumes). Light wear on the hinges but otherwise in very good condition. Complete with all engravings. 82 p. text with an introduction by Professor J. Stecher of Ghent University and dedicated to the city of Ghent. At the end there is a section included with 35 engravings (coats of arms; medals; military and civil attire,...) printed on sturdy paper. A number of engravings are colored.
The author is Félix De Vigne (1806 – 1862), a Belgian history painter, engraver, art historian and teacher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent. He specialized in history painting inspired by the Middle Ages — especially scenes of daily life, guilds and trades.
