In Paris, at Jean-Baptiste Coignard, Printer Ordinary to the King, rue S. Jacques, at the Golden Bible, 1688 (M. DC. LXXXVIII.). With the privilege of His Majesty.
One volume in-12. Bilingual edition (Latin text and French translation facing). Ornamented with an engraved frontispiece, headbands and initial capitals. Copy dedicated to Monseigneur Boucherat, Chancellor and Keeper of the Seals of France.
Full brown morocco of the period, spine with raised bands ornamented with gilt compartments featuring floral and geometric motifs, title-piece in brown morocco. Speckled edges. Period binding rubbed with wear to the headcaps, corners and joints. Interior generally fresh, enhanced by a pretty engraved frontispiece vignette and scattered old handwritten notes on the guards and the title page.
Precious seventeenth-century classic edition containing Cicero’s major philosophical treatises (Cato Maior de Senectute and Laelius de Amicitia), as well as his Paradoxa Stoicorum. The translation and critical apparatus are the work of the academicien Guillaume Du Bois, after the illustrious Latin edition by Graevius.
