The Promise of Returning

In The Promise of Returning, Valdi builds a scene marked by the presence of what has not yet happened. An empty armchair occupies the interior while the open door guides the gaze toward an exterior space. The room seems paused in a moment of waiting, as if someone had just left or were about to return.

The composition plays with the contrast between the interior's intimacy and the opening to the outside. The intense red of the wall, the greens, blues and oranges create an architecture of color planes that transforms a everyday scene into an emotional space. The mirror also introduces a second gaze within the painting, visually extending what exists beyond the room.

The empty armchair thus acquires a special meaning: it ceases to be merely an object and becomes the mark of a presence. The door remains open and, with it, the possibility of return. The work speaks of those places that keep a part of us even when we are no longer in them.
