Description from the seller
This evocative still life by Antonio Sciacca presents three vibrant red poppies arranged in an ornamental dark vase, set against a deep, almost nocturnal background. The composition is heightened by the rich red fabric that spreads across the lower part of the scene, creating a dramatic field of colour that echoes the flowers above.
Sciacca places particular emphasis on the contrast between the luminous reds of the poppies and the surrounding darkness. The delicate, irregular petals are built through layered brushwork, with bright scarlet and vermilion passages catching the light before giving way to deeper crimson and burgundy shadows. At the centre of the flowers, darker interiors punctuated by small touches of green and yellow provide a striking focal point.
The flowers are supported by an abundance of elongated green foliage, painted with lively, directional strokes. The leaves extend outward from the vase in an almost fan-like arrangement, introducing movement and balancing the vertical rhythm of the three blooms.
At the centre of the composition sits a small, richly decorated black vase. Its reflective surface reveals warm golden and ochre passages, while the ornamental decoration adds an unexpected sense of antiquity and intimacy to the scene. The vase is carefully positioned against the red textile, its dark silhouette providing a strong visual anchor.
The draped fabric is treated with broad, expressive strokes, creating folds and undulations that move across the lower portion of the canvas. Its intense reds and deep shadows reinforce the theatrical atmosphere of the painting, while the dark background allows the flowers and vase to emerge almost as if illuminated on a stage.
The work demonstrates Sciacca’s interest in the traditional still-life genre while approaching it through a distinctly expressive use of colour and brushwork. Rather than simply recording a floral arrangement, the artist creates a concentrated study of light, texture, ornament and colour, giving the composition a rich and contemplative atmosphere.
