On the Roman Republic, or On the Military and Civil Affairs of the Romans, for elucidating the ancient authors. By Petrus Josephus Cantelius of the Society of Jesus. Fourth edition, corrected from the previous, and adorned with many copper engravings.
Trajecti ad Rhenum [Utrecht], Apud Franciscum Halmam, & Gulielmum van de Water, 1696 [avec un frontispice gravé daté 1606 [1706] par I. Mulder d'après G. Hoet].
One volume in-12, bound in full brown calf of the period, with a smooth spine or with raised bands, showing significant rubbing, pronounced wear and notable leather losses at the headpieces, on the joints as well as on the boards.
The work opens with an allegorical engraved frontispiece signed I. Mulder and G. Hoet, followed by a title page printed in red and black adorned with a typographic vignette. This fourth, enriched edition is sumptuously illustrated with numerous engravings hors-texte and folding plates, including notably a large ancient map of Rome (Antiquæ Urbis Imago) by Onofrio Panvinio, illustrations of the Roman triumphs (Iconismus triumphi), the rites of sacrifice (Antiquorum Sacrificandi Ritus), as well as banquet and funeral scenes after Just Lipsius.
