Donna Africana, an oil on canvas portrait attributed to Angelo Garino of the Italian School (XX), unsigned? actually signed A. Garino, 61 × 45 cm, original edition, in good condition with a restoration at the upper centre, on original canvas mounted on a contemporaneous wooden frame, and accompanied by a seller’s certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
Attributed to Angelo Garino (Turin 1860 – Nice 1945)
Portrait of an African woman, oil on canvas, 20th century
Interesting half-length female portrait depicting an African woman, characterized by rich traditional attire, ornamental necklace and decorated headdress.
The work stands out for its high painterly quality, attention to the rendering of flesh tones, the volumetric modeling of the face and the refined chromatic modulation, elements coherent with Angelo Garino's portrait production, Italian painter active from the end of the nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century.
The painting bears the signature “Garino” at the bottom, stylistically and graphically compatible with known signatures of the artist. The exotic subject, though less frequent, falls within the period’s figurative sensibility and testifies to the interest in extra-European themes typical of the early twentieth century.
Work offered with certificate of authenticity issued by the seller at their own responsibility, in the absence of an official archive or a catalog raisonné of the artist.
Original support, canvas mounted on a contemporaneous wooden frame.
Condition: good, with normal signs of time., bears restoration at the top center
