Description from the seller
Ludvig Manderström, Correspondence and negotiations concerning the marriage of Prince Charles, brother of King Gustav III, with the Princess of Holstein-Gottorp [followed by] Unpublished correspondence relating to the history of Sweden 1772-1780.
S.n. [Stockholm], s.l., s.d. [1849? and 1843]. 8vo, XVI-199-[2]-VII-145 pp.
Original edition of the two works printed in 40 copies, both bearing no. 7 with a note, certainly autograph of Manderström, “His Excellency Monsieur le Baron de Stierneld”—that is Gustaf Algernon Stierneld (1791-1868), who served as Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs. Manderström would also be named to the same ministry a few years later. He was then the chief of staff to the King of Sweden, Oscar I.
Copy filled with a photo cdv of Baron Stierneld at the end of his life with a letter from the baron’s daughter (signed “La Fille”): “My Father is sincerely grateful to you for your card and for what you kindly wish for him. He enjoins me to express this to you properly. Add a touch of your own; this will make you embrace even more the friendship which the Father and the Daughter bear you. Please give my regards to your wife.”
Note of 1869: “Given by Mina Stierneld in memory of her father. Näsby 10 September 1869. H Fournier.” This refers to Hugues Fournier (1821-1898), senator of Indre-et-Loire and diplomat. He was Swedish ambassador from 1862-1871.
No copy of either work in French libraries. 6 copies of the first work in public libraries (Yale and 5 in the Netherlands) and 4 copies of the second work (Harvard, Berlin, Copenhagen and Ballerup).
Bottle-green morocco half-binding with corners, boards in decorative hammered paper featuring a foliate motif. Foxing (due to paper quality). The digitized copy of one of the two works has aged in the same way.
