1. Tumar Khanum

Tumar Khanum (Tomyris / Tumar) was the queen of the Massagetae, a nomadic people of the ancient world who lived in the regions east of the Caspian Sea. Her name is preserved in ancient sources, particularly in the writings of Herodotus, in connection with the conflict with Cyrus the Great in the 6th century BCE. According to Herodotus, after the death of her son during the conflict, Tumar led her people into the final battle against Cyrus, in which the Massagetae defeated his army.

In modern Turkmen cultural tradition, Tumar Khanum is also regarded as a prominent legendary female figure associated with the ancient ancestors of the Turkmen people, symbolizing courage, leadership and determination.

This painting is an artistic interpretation of Tumar Khanum. The costume and jewelry are inspired by the visual language and traditional aesthetics of Turkmen culture rather than being intended as an historically exact reconstruction of her clothing.

2. Technique and Execution

The portrait is created with a painterly and expressive approach. Instead of rendering every detail in a highly realistic manner, the crown, jewelry and fabric are developed through rough, visible and spontaneous brushstrokes.

The crown and ornaments are suggested through a limited number of carefully placed marks and areas of color, creating an impression of metal, light and intricate decoration without depicting every individual detail. The clothing is built through variations in paint thickness and energetic brushwork, suggesting the texture, folds and depth of the fabric.

The contrast between the relatively refined treatment of the face and the more vigorous, textured handling of the surrounding costume and ornaments is an essential part of the visual language of the work. Rather than fully describing every detail, the painting allows the viewer to perceive and complete the forms through suggestion.

Behzad Mojarad Bigdeli, known by his stage name “BarBeni,” was born in 1981 in Tehran, Iran. He completed his studies in architecture and later obtained a two-year degree in sculpture from the University of Tehran.

A self-taught artist in drawing, he has held several exhibitions on themes such as freedom, human rights, and nature, winning multiple awards in the fields of cartoons and caricature.

For nearly three years, he has been living in Germany, where he has participated in several group exhibitions in Oldenburg and Hamburg.

During this time, many of his paintings have been sold on reputable platforms such as Catawiki, SingularArt, and Saatchi.

He is highly passionate about sharing his experiences and skills with the younger generation.
