A Dutch historical reference in half-leather binding, Handvesten, Octroyen, Privilegien en Regten, aan de Stede Vlaardingen / Naspeuring en aanwyzing by Martinus Albertusz. Nievelt and Arnold Hoogvliet, 1771–1775, 656 pages, with copper engravings and a city plan of Vlaardingen.
Description from the seller
The 1775 edition of Charters, Grants, Privileges, and Rights to the City of Vlaardingen is a reprint of the original Hague edition from 1772. Although the work appeared anonymously at the time, historians attribute it to Martinus Albertusz van Nievelt (1710–1794), who was the city advocate of Vlaardingen from 1739 to 1778. Nievelt studied law in Utrecht and played a significant role in organizing and describing the ancient city archives. His legal knowledge made him especially suited to systematically document the historical privileges and rights of the city. (DBNL)
It is a substantial collection of medieval and early modern charters, patents, privileges, by-laws, and other official documents that had been granted to Vlaardingen by the counts of Holland and later the States of Holland. In addition, it contains an extensive historical description of the city, its origins, development, government, and economic significance. The work was compiled on the order of the city authorities and served not only as a legal reference but also as a defense of the urban rights in disputes with the manorial lord. The edition is richly illustrated with engravings, city views, seals, and a map of Vlaardingen. To this day it is regarded as one of the most important sources for the history of Vlaardingen and forms the basis for many later historical publications about the city (Chatgpt)
(Nievelt, Martinus Albertusz. (editor)).
