Memories from Algiers is a travelogue from 1865 by the Dutch merchant and writer Daniël Hartevelt, based on his stay in North Africa.
Background and Publication
• Author: Daniël Hartevelt (1824–1896), born in Brielle. (biography in the Yearbook of the Society of Dutch Literature, 1897)
• Publication year: 1865 ( published by D.A. Thieme in Arnhem).
• Series: Appeared as No. 56 in the popular Gulden Edition.
• Origin: The texts first appeared as a feuilleton in the Arnhemsche Courant.
Contents and Style
• Experience: The material was gathered in the winter of 1862–1863 on the northwest coast of Africa.
• Style: Entertaining and loosely written, characteristic of his strong personality.
• Illustrations: The work originally contained 4 lithographic plates.
