She sits in the dark, the bright cloth slipped over her shoulders, the skull in her lap. The eyelids are lowered, the mouth slightly open – not terror, but a quiet pause:
Memento mori, the old admonition of art history: remember that you are mortal – here not as a threat, but as a dialogue between warm skin and cool bone.
Crash takes up the motif of the Vanitas and translates it into the classical chiaroscuro of the old masters. The light of a Caravaggio shapes the chest, the knees and the ivory tone of the skull out of the darkness; Rembrandt's warm glow of shadow drapes over skin and cloth. Up close the subtle transitions become apparent: how living color dissolves into the darkness, how bone stands against the rose of the skin.
A small format with the presence of a devotional image – sensual, quiet and inevitable.
