Jef DIEDEREN (Heerlen 1920 - Amsterdam 2009)
Painter, Graphic Artist
Education: Jef Diederen studied at the Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool in Maastricht. He continued his training at the Rijksacademie voor de Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Amsterdam Jef Diederen was one of the so-called 'Limburg Amsterdammers'. Diederen participated in 1948 in the group exhibition Amsterdamse schilders van Nu and had his first solo exhibition in 1957. Until 1955 he largely painted landscapes in gouache and made drawings. Many works are based on the realistic landscapes from his homeland, South Limburg. Later, Jef Diederen developed more in an abstract direction, but landscapes remained a major source of inspiration for him. The art of Jef Diederen is lyrically abstract with a friendly and gentle appearance, yet it possesses strong colors. Diederen, as an independent artist, never sought fixed affiliation with groups or movements. His oil paintings often had unconventional dimensions and thus stood out. He also created combinations of canvases of different sizes. In addition to his numerous paintings and works on paper, he undertook various commissions for wall paintings and stained-glass windows. Topics such as terror and war violence have always had a major influence on his work. World War II and the persecution of Jews, the war in Vietnam, the oppression of Palestinians and Indigenous peoples, have accordingly been repeatedly reflected in his work. In between, Diederen was also continually inspired by nature, architecture, dance, and music, leading to many new colorful works. Exhibitions and awards: Livingstone Gallery, The Hague; Gallery 9, Amsterdam; Galerie Willy Schoots, Eindhoven
