Adolf Böhm, a 19th‑century German oil painting titled Monk beside a Venetian church portal, signed on the lower left, measuring 47 × 34 cm and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Adolf Böhm (1844–?) – Monk at Venetian church portal – Oil on canvas – Signed
Description
Atmospheric and detailed 19th-century painting by Adolf Böhm (1844–?), signed bottom left “Ad. Böhm.”
The work shows a monk at the monumental entrance of a church or cloister, with doves on the square in the foreground. The artist paid great attention to the architecture, the weathered masonry and the Gothic sculptural decorations of the portal. The warm light and the dark entrance create a strong atmospheric contrast.
Technique: oil on canvas
Dimensions of painting: ca. 47 × 34 cm
Signature: bottom left “Ad. Böhm”
Period: late 19th century
Frame: old, richly worked gilded frame, with signs of use and age.
Particularly interesting is the reverse side. There is an old gallery label from:
G. M. Lotinga – Fine Art Galleries
Old and Modern Masters
57 New Bond Street, London W.1
This historic London gallery label forms an interesting part of the provenance of the painting.
The painting shows aging characteristics appropriate for a work from this period, including craquelure and localized wear. The frame also bears signs of age and use. See the close‑up photos for a good impression of the condition.
An attractive and characterful work for collectors of 19th‑century European painting, architectural subjects, and Venetian/Italian scenes.
