Description from the seller
Gundi Falk (1966) – Nine Silhouettes on Blue – Collage and cut-out on canvas, 97 × 77 cm
Artist: Gundi Falk (born 1966 in Salzburg, Austria – lives and works in Brussels)
Title: Nine Silhouettes on Blue
Date: Circa 2000-2010
Technique: Collage and cut-out on canvas
Dimensions: 97 × 77 cm
Signature: Atelier stamp “GUNDI FALK BRUXELLES” on the back of the canvas and on the frame
Condition: Canvas stretched on its original frame, ready to be exhibited.
Framing: Sold unframed
Provenance: Artist’s studio, Brussels
The work
Nine black silhouettes, each edged in white, occupy an intensely blue field cut into a 3 × 3 grid. The shapes reply to each other without ever repeating: bodies, signs, fragments of movement.
The true plastic interest lies in the cut-out collage. Each figure is affixed, slightly raised from the canvas. The white is not merely a painted line: it is the edge of the cut, the thickness, the shadow. From a distance the work reads as graphic and immediate; up close one reads the material, the relief, the studio work. Construction over flat painting.
Large format, strong contrast of black/white/Ultramarine blue Klein, a definite wall presence.
Artist biography
Gundi Falk, born in 1966 in Salzburg, is a painter, sculptor and contemporary dancer by training. She studied dance and calligraphy in Asia and Europe.
Based in Brussels for many years, she develops a practice where movement, rhythm, chance and space are inseparable. The line is not a descriptive contour: it is the trace of a moving body.
Since 1998 she has exhibited internationally. Notable exhibitions include:
- Gallery at the Assignment Theater, Taipei (1998)
- Grand Casino Bern (2005)
- Le Corbusier, Marseille (2006)
- Museum of New Art, Pärnu, Estonia (2009-2010)
- Galerie Vertigo Art and Le Salon d’Art, Brussels (2011, 2014).
From 2011 she collaborates with Pierre Cordier, inventor of the chemigram (1956). Their joint works have been shown at Von Lintel Gallery, New York (Unique, 2013); Haines Gallery, San Francisco (Index and Icon, 2015); The Heckscher Museum, New York (Modern Alchemy – Experiments in Photography, 2014-2015); Paris Photo (2016); Galerie Volker Diehl, Berlin (2016); Barbado Gallery, Lisbon (2016); Galerie Anna Wenger, Zurich (The Chemigram, 2018); Galerie Gimpel & Müller, Paris (DUO, 2020-2021); Hangar Photo Art Center, Brussels (UNIQUE / Beyond Photography, 2024); La Centrale.brussels (Hosting, 2024).
In parallel, her pictorial work — interlacings, nude constructions, lineworks — has been presented at Espace Art by Goralska, Luxembourg (Entrelacs – Space of dynamism and breaths, 2022), RSF Paris (2025) and Galerie Marschner, Wels (Lebenslinien, 2025-2026).
Her works are held in private collections across Europe, the United States and Asia.
