Oil on canvas, 18th‑century Flemish inn scene titled Herbergscéne, unsigned and attributed to Jan Baptiste Lambrechts, Belgium, 37 × 31.5 cm, sold with frame, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Atmospheric 18th-century Flemish inn-scene, executed in oil on canvas.
The work is not signed, but is attributed to the Flemish Baroque master Jan Baptist Lambrechts (1680-1731), known for his lively inn interiors and genre genre. Many of his inn scenes remained historically unsigned. The composition in this work stylistically and compositionally aligns with other well-known works by Lambrechts. Notably, the seated female figure in the foreground, which shows strong similarities to women figures in other works by the artist, including pose, clothing and facial expression. Also the inn interior, the grouping of the figures and the warm, subdued color palette fit within his well-known oeuvre.
Jan Baptist Lambrechts was born in Antwerp. His parents died when he was young. His stepbrother Jeroom Lambrechts taught him to paint. He traveled to Lille in 1703 and spent the following years traveling. In 1709 he became a master of the Sint-Lucasgilde in Antwerp. He left Antwerp in 1731 and died shortly thereafter. Lambrechts was highly regarded for his fine brushwork and detailed compositions. Works by him can be found in, among others, the Uffizi in Florence and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.
The painting is offered in a richly decorated antique frame. The rear shows the old canvas-and-stretcher construction. The work has been re-framed by a professional framing workshop in the wooden/plaster frame. It is oil on canvas and shows signs of aging, including craquelure and light wear consistent with the age of the work. The frame has some minor damage at the corners and has one corner repaired. See the photos for a good impression. The photos are part of the description.
Dimensions:
Canvas: H x W 37 x 31.5 cm
Frame: H x W x D 57 x 50 x 8 cm.
