Description from the seller
Rare Complete Series (6/6 volumes) - Medical-Surgical Practice (Original Edition 1907)
A note to bibliophiles, collectors of the history of science, or lovers of vintage décor and the “Belle Époque”!
Discover this magnificent complete set in 6 volumes of the famous “Pratique Médico-Chirurgicale” (P.M.C.), published in Paris in 1907 by the prestigious Masson et Cie, booksellers to the Academy of Medicine.
Placed under the high direction of the illustrious professors E. Brissaud, A. Pinard, and P. Reclus, this monumental alphabetical encyclopedia (nearly 5,700 pages in total) offers a fascinating panorama of medical knowledge at the very beginning of the 20th century: general medicine, cutting-edge surgical techniques, obstetrics, pediatrics, nascent psychiatry, and forensic medicine.
The highlights of this copy:
Iconography: Exceptional medical imagery — hundreds of historical figures, anatomical drawings, and period photographs (including the famous demonstration of the Babinski sign, the iconography of Adipose from the Salpêtrière, or tumor surgery by Dr. Morestin).
Magnificent period binding: Red brick faux leather. The smooth spines are adorned with superb lettered and gilded (leaf) compartments and gilded decorative motifs. Head edges are gilded. Boards and paste-downs marbled in the original “caillouté” pattern.
Historical integrity: The set includes, at the end of Volume VI, the very rare original publisher’s medical catalog (48 pages) detailing the publications of the era (notably the Précis of the legendary Pr. Alexandre Lacassagne).
Condition:
Books are solid and well-presented. The interior is clean, complete, and securely bound to the page block, despite some normal scattered tanning and a few old annotations on the inner flyleaves. The leather binding shows signs of time that add to its charm (usure wear to the headcaps of Volumes I and VI, slightly rubbed corners).
