Elegant Japanese Sōsaku Kokeshi “Kantsubaki” (寒椿 – Camellia in Winter), an work by Okamoto Usaburo (1917–2009), founder of the renowned Usaburo Kokeshi workshop in Gunma.
“Kantsubaki” is one of the most representative creations of the first generation Usaburō. The model makes use of the natural beauty and grain of the wood, decorated with red camellia motifs, one of the artist's favored subjects.
The historical importance of the model is particularly interesting: according to the official Usaburo Kokeshi archive, a specimen of “Kantsubaki” was purchased by Emperor Shōwa, a significant recognition in the history of the atelier.
The figure features the characteristic large dark headdress, the stylized face, and the kimono decorated with camellias and geometric motifs. On the base are still present the original Usaburo labels, while on the body the artist’s signature/mark can be seen.
Okamoto Usaburō began kokeshi production in 1950, developing new techniques that combined painting, carving, and pyrography and contributing significantly to the development of modern Sōsaku Kokeshi.
