Satsuma vase in earthenware from Japan (c. 1910–1920), hand-painted with warrior and floral motifs, featuring two gold elephant-head handles; dimensions 50 × 24 × 48 cm; condition: reasonable, heavily used with a small missing piece on one side of a handle.
Description from the seller
An exceptionally beautiful and imposing antique Japanese vase in the recognizable Satsuma style. The vase is aroundly and intricately hand-painted with traditional depictions of Japanese warriors (samurai style) and figures on the front, and an elegant floral motif (peony roses) on the back. The refined details are delicately applied with the traditional moriage technique (relief enamel) and finished with gold-gilded accents and characteristic crazing in the glaze. The vase features two sturdy, gold-colored handles in the shape of elephant heads (stylized trunks). At the bottom the vase is marked with a traditional red mark. Condition: The vase is in a neat, lived-in antique state with beautiful bright colors. As seen in the photos, one side is missing a small piece of the trunk of the handle. This is hardly noticeable when the vase is displayed standing due to the gold finish and positioning, but is noted for completeness. No major cracks or deep fractures otherwise."
