Description from the seller
Ancient Indian Temple Toy – Horse on Wheels – Bronze/Bronze-Leftover Brass – India – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Description:
For sale is a charming and expressive antique bronze figure of a horse on four movable wheels. This type of object is known in the Asian art trade as traditional Indian temple toy (“Temple Toy”) and typically originates from Rajasthan or Central India.
The figure was cast in detailed handmade craftsmanship using the elaborate lost-wax technique. It features stylized decorations on the saddle, bridle and mane, which are typical for sacred folk-art objects of this era. Originally, such figures were offered as votive offerings in Hindu temples.
The piece possesses a beautiful, authentic patina of age (chocolate-brown patina with slight oxidation marks), which wonderfully highlights the relief-like decorations. The four wheels are fully functional and mounted on iron axles.
