Jacqueline Gilson (Melun, June 27, 1912 – Auxerre, September 11, 1991) trained at the Ateliers d’Art Sacré founded by Maurice Denis and Georges Desvallières, on Place de Furstenberg in Paris, where she later became an instructor of the preparatory course. Her painting, nourished by geometric rigidity and ardent light, embraces both the gentle landscapes of Burgundy, including views of the Vermenton bell tower in Yonne, and the burning atmospheres of Andalusia and the Balearics, whose gold of the retables, according to critic Jean Mouton, plunges her work into “a new ardor.” The French state recognized her talent as early as 1950 by purchasing L’Âne de Soller for 25,000 francs, while the Goya Museum in Castres exhibited her alongside Pierre Roy, Desnoyer, and Brayer. Settled in Toronto in the postwar years, she joined the Canadian Group of Painters and established herself on the Canadian institutional scene: presence at the National Gallery of Canada, exhibitions at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, national tours with The Evening Market (Spain) and Autumn with Red Hands.
