Description from the seller
G. Panebianco –
Great high relief of the face of Jesus Christ with crown of thorns (Ecce Homo / Christus Patiens)
Gesso / Scagliola of art (hollow fusion) with wooden structural inserts on the back
Artistic multi-colored patina on the front (antique bronze/stone effect)
Italy, Mid 20th Century
Wall sculpture / high relief (with original mounting hook)
Extraordinary and intense wall-high relief in patinated plaster, depicting the head of Jesus Christ during the Passion (Ecce Homo), bearing the incised signature of the Italian sculptor Panebianco.
The work dramatically captures the moment of martyrdom: the head is gently inclined, the eyes are closed in pain and the mouth is just parted in the last breath, all treated with a notable plastic sensitivity of Expressionist and Realist imprint.
Color-wise, the front surface has been masterfully finished with a polychrome patina in tones of ocher, brown and antique green.
The rear section shows the authentic nature of the artifact: it is a hollow plaster cast (scagliola), typical of artisanal sculptural production of the century. The back preserves the old metal eyelet hook for wall mounting, stabilized at the top, and includes two wooden reinforcements embedded directly in the plaster at the base to preserve the integrity of the supporting points and prevent chipping.
Condition: The sculpture appears solid and structurally intact. The original front patina is well preserved and maintains the drama of the details. The rear shows the raw texture of the period plaster and the wooden structural reinforcements are firmly secure. It presents very slight and normal signs of surface wear and small historic chippings along the inner perimeter edges, which do not compromise the aesthetic of the exposed part but attest to its authenticity and age. A very light chipping of the left eye eyelid (almost imperceptible).
Rigid, well-cushioned, and traceable packaging
