Maria Maddalena penitente, XVII century Italian oil painting.
Description from the seller
Maria Maddalena penitente – oil on canvas – after a model by Titian
Interesting and well-painted image depicting Penitent Saint Mary Magdalene, with loose hair and gaze turned to the sky. The right hand rests on the chest; in the foreground appear the jar of unguents, an open book resting on a skull, and in the background a landscape with buildings.
The arrangement of the figure and objects closely reproduces the late Maddalene type of Titian, widely echoed and interpreted by other painters. The work proposed here presents its own variations, particularly in the landscape. The wording “after a model by Titian” indicates a compositional reference and does not constitute an attribution to Titian or to his workshop.
In the dark area there is a partially legible inscription, documented in the photographs. The surface shows craquelure, small losses and signs of age. The back reveals a canvas mounted on a wooden frame with wedges; the work appears re-lined, a circumstance to be verified by direct examination.
Author, exact dating and provenance not documented. Interested parties are invited to inspect all the original photographs, including those of the details and the back, which are an integral part of the description.
Shipping: the painting will be carefully packed and entrusted to an appropriate courier. Delivery times abroad may vary depending on the destination country and customs procedures. Any duties, taxes and import charges applied in the destination country are the buyer’s responsibility.
A certificate of legitimate provenance will be issued by me, signed as the rightful owner; the painting was inherited from my father, a well-known painter and collector.
