Description from the seller
Emil Frische (1872–after 1916) — Barnyard Scene
Interesting oil on canvas by the German painter Emil Frische (1872–after 1916), signed in the lower right corner.
The work depicts a tranquil barnyard scene, with different birds—geese, ducks and chickens—distributed in front of an old rural stone building. The composition blends landscape, popular architecture, and animal representation, creating an everyday scene of intimate and evocative character.
Emil Frische was born in Düsseldorf in 1872, into a family closely linked to the art world. He was the son of the landscape painter Heinrich Ludwig Frische and trained at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he studied under Claus-Meyer. His known production includes genre scenes, interiors, portraits and still lifes, and his artistic activity is also documented during the early decades of the twentieth century. Specialized market sources record several Frische works that appeared at auction.
The painting is integrated within the tradition of the Düsseldorf School, characterized by special attention to landscape, genre scenes, and the observation of everyday life. Frische is also listed among artists historiographically linked to that school.
In this work, the surface treatment stands out in particular, with a thick, richly textured brushwork that is especially visible on the walls, the ground, and the vegetation. The color range, dominated by ochres, earthy tones, subdued greens and grays, helps create a serene rural atmosphere, while the birds in the foreground add dynamism and life to the composition.
The work presents a good overall state of conservation consistent with its age, with the usual signs derived from the passage of time. The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow a detailed appreciation of the piece’s condition.
From a private collection.
The painting is presented in a gilded frame of a later period. The frame shows some damage, losses, and signs of use. It is included solely as a gift and without added commercial value, and therefore its condition will not be a basis for complaint.
The work will be shipped using professional packing, carefully protected with materials specifically designed for artworks to ensure maximum safety during transport.
For shipments outside the European Union, the buyer should note that any duties, import taxes, customs handling fees, and other costs arising from the destination country’s laws will be the buyer’s sole responsibility. Customs procedures may also cause delays compared with standard delivery times.
An attractive German painting from the early twentieth century, representative of the figurative and genre tradition linked to the Düsseldorf art scene.
