Description from the seller

Crucifixion of Christ with the Virgin and Saint John

This notable devotional composition is presented, depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, one of the central episodes of Christian iconography, accompanied by the figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist.

The scene is arranged in a vertical structure dominated by the crucified Christ, whose anatomy is resolved with a soft modeling and directed lighting that emphasizes the drama of the moment. On the cross sits the titulus bearing the trilingual inscription “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum,” following the iconographic tradition of Nordic-rooted origin.

On either side, in a secondary yet emotionally intense position, are the figures of the Virgin, wrapped in a dark mantle and in a withdrawn attitude, and Saint John the Evangelist, represented with a reddish tunic, in a gesture of deep pain and contemplation. The chromatic contrast of red against the shadow of the background reinforces the dramatic character of the scene, in line with Baroque models influenced by Flemish art.

Stylistically, the work presents features proper to the seventeenth-century Flemish school, both in composition and iconography, with a clear lineage from the great masters of the northern European Baroque. This type of representation was widely disseminated through workshops and devotional copies, especially in the context of the circulation of pictorial models between Flanders and the European sphere.

The support, made on assembled panel, reflects traditional techniques used in the Flemish and Central European spheres, reinforcing the material coherence of the work with its attribution. The painted surface shows a homogeneous craquelure consistent with its age, as well as a natural patina that evidences the passage of time.

As for its state of conservation, the work is structurally stable, though it shows typical signs of age, such as craquelure, small losses of polychromy, and superficial dirt. Nevertheless, it retains an excellent visual reading and a notable aesthetic appeal. It could benefit from cleaning and consolidation to fully recover its chromatic richness.

The work is presented in a carved and gilded wooden frame, crafted by hand, with a wavy profile and Baroque aesthetic, which harmoniously complements the composition. This frame is included as a gift with the work, also showing some defects and wear consistent with its age.

We are dealing with a piece of great interest within the realm of Baroque religious painting, both for its quality and for its fidelity to Flemish tradition models, making it an ideal work for collection or for ambience in spaces of historical or devotional character.
