Description from the seller
Hans Berger (1882-1977) - Self-portrait
Details of the work
Artist: Hans Berger (1882-1977), an important and renowned exponent of Swiss art.
Subject: Self-portrait. An intense and quick execution that captures mature facial features, with the characteristic headdress.
Technique: Drawing (pencil/charcoal) on paper.
Signature: Hand-signed by the artist at the bottom right ("Berger").
Sheet/view dimensions: 27 x 20 cm (dimensions inferred from the pencil annotation on the back of the board).
Condition
Work: The drawing is in good conservation condition. The paper shows a natural and fascinating patina of time with a slight and uniform yellowing, a feature that attests to its authenticity and period.
Provenance and Historical Details
The work boasts excellent Swiss provenance. On the back is an ink-stamped historical label from the Geneva frame-maker "B. BERTOSSA - Cadres, Glaces" located in Geneva. This label situates the piece historically. There is also an old archive number ("51245"), typical of private collections or historic galleries.
The frame, if visible in the photo, is included in the lot as a pure gift from me and is not part of the sale, does not determine its value, and, given its delicacy, is not insured. Consequently, any defects already present on the frame are not reported and any damage to it during transit will not be considered for claims or returns.
Shipping and customs notes
The item is shipped from Geneva, Switzerland. For this reason, delivery times to European Union countries may be slightly longer than usual due to standard customs procedures.
I would also remind you that, since Switzerland lies outside the EU customs area, import duties, local VAT and customs duties are entirely the buyer's responsibility and will be charged by your country's authorities upon delivery. I recommend informing yourself in advance to avoid surprises. Alternatively, if you have the possibility, pickup in person in Geneva is always the option I prefer and strongly recommend, as it eliminates shipping costs and ensures maximum safety for the artwork. If shipping is chosen, I will do my best to package it to protect the painting during transit.
