Léon Gaud, born in Versoix in 1844 and died in Les Eaux-Vives (Geneva) in 1908, is a Swiss painter active from the late 19th into the early 20th century. A pupil of Barthélemy Menn in Geneva, a central figure of the Geneva school, he trained in a high-level artistic environment and participated, under the direction of his master, in the decoration of the Knights’ Hall at Gruyères Castle, where he came into contact with artists such as Camille Corot.
From 1862 he regularly exhibited in Geneva’s art manifestations and in 1902 succeeded Menn as director of the School of Fine Arts of Geneva. His career was crowned in 1900 by a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of Paris.
His production concentrates mainly on intimate landscapes and rustic scenes, often set in the surroundings of Lake Geneva. His works reflect a poetic sensibility and a humanist vision of rural life, with a painting language close to the Barbizon tradition and French naturalism.
The present painting depicts a scene of rural life animated by figures and poultry, at the foot of a building. The composition is built with a free and vibrant brushstroke, where forms emerge through warm and harmonious color contrasts. The intimate atmosphere and the golden light give the work a particularly evocative character.
Work mounted in a decorative frame in the style.
Good overall condition, with slight traces of aging consistent with the support.
