Description from the seller
Frédéric Barzilay
(1917–2015)
Abstract Composition
Mixed-media material texture on rigid support
Signed and dated 1962 at the bottom right
Dimensions of the work: 28 x 25 cm
Dimensions with frame: 41 x 39 cm
Important abstract, matter-based work realized in 1962 by Frédéric Barzilay, an artist active in the Swiss post-war abstract and informal painting scene. The composition unfolds over a sober yet vibrant surface, built through successive stratifications of painting material, with thicknesses, cracks, and reliefs that give the work a strong plastic presence.
At the center emerges a blue-gray chromatic mass, dense and cracked, dialoguing with bright yellow accents and lighter, more diffuse interventions, creating a dynamic balance between gesture, material, and color. The language is fully traceable to informal research in which the material becomes the protagonist and the painting process is visible and intentionally expressive.
The work is signed “F. Barzilay” and dated “62” at the bottom right. It is presented in the original frame with a fabric matte, on the reverse of which is affixed the label of Fabrique de cadres – Galerie d’art Fred Chédel, Genève, an element that testifies to a quality framing in the Swiss context. On the back there are also handwritten notes relating to the dimensions of the work and the support.
Condition: good. The surface exhibits reliefs, cracks, and intentional irregularities, coherent with the matter-based technique and the informal language of the artist. Frame with normal signs of aging.
Shipping / Pickup:
Careful packing and tracked shipping. Postal shipping is the most economical solution but not the most suitable for works with a textured surface; every effort will be made to ensure adequate protection, with no responsibility assumed for damage arising from transport. Insurance available on request, at buyer’s expense. Any duties and customs charges are charged to the buyer (delays and costs may occur also for shipments within Europe, shipping from Switzerland).
The photographs constitute an integral part of the description.
Good auction."
