Lot containing two Dutch-language publications by De Gemeenschap/Utrecht, aNti-schUnd (1927) and Hagel en Vuur (1929), Dutch, soft cover, special edition, 86 pages, format 24 × 18 cm, in mixed/multiple condition.
Description from the seller
Two scarce issues from De Gemeenschap/Utrecht:
1. aNti-schUnd (1927)
2. Hagel en Vuur (1929)
1. aNti-schUnd (1927) is a satirical and polemical pamphlet from 1927.
It was written by among others Hendrik Marsman and people from the circle of De Gemeenschap.
It was directed against the Amsterdam magazine Nu and its editor Israel Querido.
The pamphlet was thus a literary conflict: an attack on what they saw as poor literary criticism and a wrong direction in Dutch literature, and an interesting example of avant-garde book design.
The title “aNti-schUnd” is deliberately ironic (with odd capitals) and plays with the German word Schund ("trash literature").
The magazine De Gemeenschap (Utrecht, from 1925) was an avant-garde Catholic cultural periodical that sought to combine art, literature, and politics. It was known for its polemical style and conflicts with other literary circles. Well-known authors who published there included among others: Hendrik Marsman, Jan Campert, Paul van Ostaijen, J. Slauerhoff.
State/condition:
It is a brochure/pamphlet from December 1927, volume 1, No. 3 -
46 pages - format 24x18 cm – the cover depicts the magazine Nu.
Stitched binding, despite a delicate execution very well preserved, the right side of most pages shows some fraying due to paper quality (photo). On the front cover is a name stamp of Kees Hartmans.
2. Hagel en Vuur – edition: Gemeenschap Utrecht
Hagel en vuur - the youth and politics.
Edition: De Gemeenschap/Utrecht, ca.1929
Execution/condition: a well-preserved pamphlet, 40 pages, typographic cover with photo portraits of Benito Mussolini, Willem Hubert Nolens, and Vladimir Lenin - format 22x17 cm - paper cover - 40 pp – illustrated - supplement of: De Gemeenschap vol. 6 – in very good condition with only minor signs of use on the right side of the front.
Addition: in the pamphlet the official article card of Boekhandel Brugsma/Utrecht (photo)
Background:
Intended as an attack on bourgeois and traditional literary criticism
The title (“Hagel en Vuur”) symbolically refers to assault, struggle, and renewal in literature.
The circle around De Gemeenschap consisted of young modernist writers. Names found in or around such publications include: Hendrik Marsman, J. Slauerhoff, Jan Campert, Anton van Duinkerken
Books from De Gemeenschap are known for their strong typography and modernist covers. They were often designed by artists from the same circle. As a result, they are nowadays also beloved by collectors of book design from the interwar period.
