Presenting a personal best-of selection of INTERNATIONAL PHOTOBOOKS from my PRIVATE COLLECTION and from RECENT ACQUISITATIONS.
"A brilliant innovator, Lee Friedlander is famous as the master of the seemingly artless photograph of the street. Out of these mundane surroundings come complex images filled with visual jokes, subliminal connec-tions, gentle perceptions -forcing us to see a new world in the commonplace.
Lee Friedlander Portraits presents a little-known aspect of the photographer's work, but the portraits have the wry, warm, offbeat quality that is essential Fried-lander. The sitters are seen in familiar, usually simple, settings, but an instinctive photographic vision has caught them in unusual perspectives or lighting, with fleeting expressions or casual postures that are richly suggestive of context, past and future. Many are of children: tender, yet allowing them their astonishing directness. Many are of friends: Garry Winogrand shortly before his death, in an unforgettably affecting image of father and daughter. Some are of the famous:
Walker Percy, a camera angle creating a corkscrew of introspection. All, in their striking variety, bear the imprint of the remarkable Lee Friedlander."

"Lee Friedlander, born 1934, is an American photographer and artist. In the 1960s and 1970s, Friedlander evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of urban 'social landscape', with many of his photographs including fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street signs. His work is characterized by its innovative use of framing and reflection, often using the natural environment or architectural elements to frame his subjects. Over the course of his career, Friedlander has been the recipient of numerous awards and his work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide (Museum of Modern Art, New York. Corcoran Gallery of Art. National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne)."
