Description from the seller
ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD EXISTS - EDITION 1/1
With this vertically oriented work, Medsan conjures Articuno — フリーザー, the legendary ice bird of the first-generation Pokémon — above a mountain hamlet buried in snow. The composition directly cites Utagawa Hiroshige’s ukiyo-e printmaking, particularly the nocturnal snow from the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō series, where travelers bent beneath their straw hats endure the storm. The red cartouche 雪の精, “the spirit of snow,” grants the pocket monster the status of an ancestral yōkai.
The treatment reproduces the grammar of Japanese woodblock printing: soft black outlines, flat color fields without shading, bokashi gradients in the indigo sky, and above all that deep Prussian blue of 19th-century aizuri-e. The snow is not painted but reserved in the white of the paper, a printmaking technique that gives flakes and roofs their matte sparkle. The bird’s tail unfurls into wavy ribbons that become the storm itself, a direct echo of Hiroshige’s stylized rain lines. The grain of aged paper, the dark edge border, the handwritten signature, and the vermilion seal at the bottom right complete the illusion of an antique print.
The mashup says one simple, true thing: the modern legendary creature finds in it the function of the traditional monster — to explain the climate, embody winter, frighten, and protect at once. The villagers do not lift their heads, busy returning home before nightfall, and this detail grounds the legend in everyday life rather than in spectacle. Two mythologies, one two centuries old and the other born in the 1990s, recognize themselves as one way of naming what eludes us.
A contemplative and graphic piece, ideal for adding a touch of contemporary Japanese printmaking to an interior of a collector who values both pop culture and the history of art.

About the Atelier:
Atelier Joconde is a collective of artists united around a living, plural contemporary creation. Established as a true center of artistic production, the studio operates both in collaborative creation and in individual approaches, depending on the projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. Beside him, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, art brut, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, realized, and followed within the atelier, with a shared artistic standard and a unique identity for each artist.
