At a young age Willem Roelofs began drawing and painting. His earliest known landscape he made when he was 15 years old. Roelofs grew up in Utrecht and studied there with the artist Abraham Hendrik Winter. In 1850 he made a trip to France and visited Barbizon and Fontainebleau. Roelofs became one of the leading painters of the Hague School. His best-known pupils were P. Gabriël and J.H. Weissenbruch.
