AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Louis Racine - The Religion, Poem.

Paris, Jean-Baptiste Coignard, Printer to the King, and Jean Desaint, bookseller, 1742.

Original edition of this famous religious poem by Louis Racine 1692-1763, son of the playwright Jean Racine.

Beautiful eighteenth-century specimen preserved in an elegant old red leather binding. Boards framed with triple gold lines with gilded fleurs-de-lis in the corners. Spine richly adorned with floral motifs and gilded lines, title gilded. Blue endpapers.

Title page illustrated with a fine engraved vignette after Charles-Nicolas Cochin. Neat printing with banners, initial letters and typographical ornaments.

Very interesting armorial ex libris pasted on the inside cover, bearing the motto In solitudine solamen. This ex libris belongs to Pierre Claude Pecquot de Saint Maurice 1687-1759, bibliophile and lawyer of the eighteenth century. This provenance is listed in several collections and bibliographic catalogs.

A particularly attractive copy due to the combination of the 1742 original edition, its gilded red contemporary binding, and this identifiable old provenance.

Overall condition good to very good for age. Binding well preserved overall with some rubbing, small marks and wear at the extremities and corners. Gilding still clearly visible. Interior clean with a few minor stains and foxing related to time. Armorial ex libris well preserved.
