Description from the seller

Angelo Jank, alias Angelo Yank (1868–1940)

The Woman with the Parrot
(Donna con pappagallo)

Rare original color lithograph, created by A. Yank for L'Estampe Moderne, series number 19 published in November 1898.

"The Woman with the Parrot" (La donna con il pappagallo) is a famous original color lithograph from 1898 by the German painter and illustrator Angelo Jank (1868–1940). The work is also noted in the history of graphic arts for a curious printing error: the Paris publisher misrendered the artist’s surname, signing the plate in the name of "A. Yank".

The print depicts a woman with short blonde hair and a hint of a smile, looking upward at a green parrot, offering it a red fruit with her right hand.

It was printed in Paris by the renowned Imprimerie Champenois for the prestigious art magazine L'Estampe Moderne. It is a color lithograph on sturdy laid paper protected by a protective transparent sheet, with the sheet size of about 40 x 31 cm. Original copies of the period bear the publisher’s watermark blind stamp in the lower right. Historic specimens of this print are preserved in major international museum institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Australia.

Lithograph inspired by a poem from "Le Miroir" by Léo Desmarais, of which an excerpt is reproduced on the protective sheet of the print. Published by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza, the magazine L'Estampe Moderne, in its two years of publication, represents one of the highest lithographic achievements of the period.

A very fine specimen.

L'Estampe Moderne consisted of original chromolithographs which, unlike other magazines and as stated on the protective sheets, were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus, a total of 100 prints appeared, covering the main artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism, Art Nouveau, Pre-Raphaelites, Orientalists, and the Belle Époque. Each four-print edition was printed in 2000 copies.

Angelo Jank was a major figure of the Munich Secession and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Although "The Woman with the Parrot" is one of his graphic works in an exquisitely Art Nouveau/Jugendstil style that has been reproduced most, Jank was renowned in Germany as a painter of animals, famed for dynamic horse scenes, horse racing, and hunting scenes.

Dimensions (sheet): 405 x 305 mm
Dimensions (image): 350 x 175 mm

Signed on the plate, lower left.
Publisher’s blind stamp, lower right, outside the image.

The print is in good condition with minor signs of aging and small edge tears and corners.
The protective tissue sheet and editorial overlay show evident folds, losses and small restorations (as in the photos that are part of the offer).

The colors are bright and the margins are complete (not trimmed).

L'Estampe Moderne was published from 1897 to 1899 as a series of 24 monthly issues, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by the Parisian Imprimerie Champenois. Many renowned European Art Nouveau artists contributed works to this publication, which consisted exclusively of original prints designed and produced specifically for this collection. The publication was curated by Charles Masson and H. Piazza. Each lithograph was accompanied by a sheet containing details (title of the work, artist’s name, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who had inspired the artist (in this case, Léo Desmarais)."
