Willem Vaarzon Morel (jr) came from a creative family. His father (Willem Vaarzon Morel sr) and his grandfather (Willem Ferdinand Isaac Vaarzon Morel) were painters. The family’s roots lay in Veere, Zeeland. Not surprising, as Veere was an international artists’ colony between 1890 and 1970. In addition to the shared given names, there were also similarities in education, namely at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam. For Willem Vaarzon Morel (jr), after deciding to study at the Rijksakademie, he first took drawing lessons at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. After his military service from 1951 to 1953, he continued his studies in Amsterdam. Later he became a teacher there and eventually also the director. After some time he decided that he liked it and began working as a free artist.
Prominently featured in the (pen) drawings, watercolors, and paintings of Willem Vaarzon Morel (jr) are horses. He painted in an impressionist style. Reportedly, he could spend hours at the Duindigt racing track in The Hague. He would make sketches there that he developed further in his studio. Not only horses, but his works also include many landscapes and livestock markets.
